Tension Pneumothorax Drainage

Introduction:

Chest injuries are a significant risk factor to death in the battlefield, early

identification and fast treatment are lifesaving .

Chest injuries and especially Tension pneumothorax are life threating, and it

is necessary to diagnose and treat the patient as fast as possible. To date,

the main and definitive treatment is Trocar. There are two general solutions

for Tension Pneumothorax drainage: The Trocar (definitive solution) and

needle decompression. The purpose of the procedure is to drain the air and

blood by catheter insertion. The trocar insertion is an invasive procedure

and includes a few steps that require doctor skills and requires time to

perform it, normally It takes 15-20 min per procedure

Project objectives :

The main objectives in this project are:

1)Design and develop a prototype of the device to drainage Tension

pneumothorax.

2)Increase the efficiency of the procedure and shorten the time of it.

3)Maintain the safety of the medical team and the patient

.

Medical Engineering

Methods :

Includes : Research of Needle base, safety mechanism to prevent lung

puncture , vibration system to reduce insertion forces, tube size for optimal

drainage, skin fixation and stretch device .

Equations and Mathematical Calculations :

1) Needle tissue interaction

2) Coil spring for safety mechanism

3) Vibration frequency for optimal insertion

4) Vibration optimal amplitude

5) Vinyl tape adhesive strength

Simulations :

Needle insertion force simulation was done by using MATLAB to

perform all calculations and to plot the results.

The calculations based on the mathematical model from Needle

Tissue interaction and are described in Insertion forces results

Results:

The project objectives were achieved, in design and develop

prototype for Tension Pneumothorax Drainage a fully model of the

device was modeled, and 3D printed.

Increase the efficiency of the procedure and shorten the time of the

procedure also achieved theoretically, the operation of the developed

device is shorter than the regular procedure and there are less

instruments to preform the procedure.

Elevator Pitch

This is a multidisciplinary project which combined medical

and mechanical engineering. The main goal is to develop a

prototype of a device to treat tension pneumothorax by

drainage trapped air inside the pleural cavity, an acute and

life-treating condition.
